Singapore Day 6

Day 6 in Singapore! Nearly thereee… Second last day

Okay this post is more about what we did rather than what we ate… and more photo spammy! Because.. its Universal Studios Sentosa Day! Been looking forward to the ‘fun’ part of the holiday all week. I know, a lot of people have said USS isn’t worth going and I can see why. The reason we decided to go is because we’ve never been to a theme park together and its probably the closest we’d get to a Universal Studios (no plans to go Japan or US!) and Luna Park is crap.. so we paid the overpriced + peak season fee to go there. More on USS later..

First! Breakfast! We did get SOME good food in our stomaches that day ;D

Conveniently across the road from our hotel, Value Hotel Thomson was a super mini hawker centre (there were like 3 stalls I think) thats known for some pretty good Bak Kut Teh!

My ears dropped when the lady said it is SG$8 for the set :S Apparently this mini food centre is one of the more expensive places for hawker food in Balestier (and attracts alot of Tycoons)

I wish we had just gone to this place all the other mornings when we couldn’t decide what to eat! I can still remember the flavours and tenderness of my bowl of bak kut teh. I love it when its not overly MSG and you can taste the herbs used in BKT. Be sure to get the whole set! with the fried donut sticks (for dipping into the sauce) and rice to compliment it.

I also wish it was a bigger serving! We only got one bowl of BKT to share because.. we also got Bak Chor Mee from the next stall..

I have read about this place on ieatishootipost when researching places to eat near our hotel, it appears that it was once really good and now his blog readers said its not as good anymore since they changed owners or something. I can’t compare to what it was before but can compare it with the other bowl of bak chor mee we had (highly ranked in SG) at Tai Hwa it was like heaven and earth. Heaven – Tai Hwa, Earth – Noi’s. It notably lacked the vinegar which has made me realize what a significance vinegar adds to this dish. It was just O.K for me, despite the photo above says so otherwise – looks mad appealing. Even I get misleaded by my own photo @_@

We then took the bus to Vivocity, for the cable car ride to Sentosa… and on the way, we saw this beautiful church..

Churches in Singapore are so pretty! like St Andrews Cathedral near City Hall was amazing. Makes me want to get married in one! I don’t recall seeing much white churches like these back in Syd :/

We followed the signs to the Cable Car entrance. We got on the ‘Jewel Cable Car’ which costed SG$24 for a one way trip! pretty damn expensive… and SG$26 if you want a return trip… only the extra $2 then why not.. might make the ride a bit more worth it. I have to say though, the views were pretty damn amazing (despite all the construction work happening in the area, mainly Sentosa)

On the way back, we even saw a couple dining in the cable cars.. what an experience.

We arrived at Sentosa and appears that it is bigger than we imagined. We had to take a bus from the cablecar stop to Universal Studios (take the red line!), its a free shuttle that drops you off at certain tourist points at Sentosa e.g. the merlion – which we missed out on! .. but saw from afar on the way back in the cablecar.

Really had to follow the signs here as the shuttle drops you off at the carpark closest to USS, we eventually found our way to the rotating Universal Studio globe. (Looks smaller than I imagined)

Had to be quick to jump into a spot before another group of tourists jump right infront of the globe!

Luckily we bought our tickets online beforehand.. we dodged this queue at 10:30am, which by the way the kids are on School holidays in SG.

The moment we entered, we saw this lady in bright red, which was none other than ‘Betty Boop’! We (okay I) rushed over and hopped into the short queue for a photo. I love that USS staff helps you take the photos with the characters, so its our one day to have people take photos of both of us! And….Lucky boyfriend.

Our USS plan was to start from Far Far Away, watch Donkey Live and progress our way through to the other recommended rides aaand leave Hollywood strip for the end when we do our souvenir shopping. It was hard resisting going into the souvenir shops! I have a weakness for those at theme parks!

Donkey Live show! Was pretty good, entertaining. I was impressed, the stage was a screen and you have Donkey engaging with the audience. I mean seriously talking to specific people in the audience. Don’t know where the spy cameras were but it was pretty cool how the voice actor could coordinate the body movements and all. I began thinking it was pre-recorded but was later on impressed. Loved Donkey for pulling out some Singaporean jokes and talking with ‘Lah’

We queued up for Canopy flyer at Jurassic Park! The queue looks crazy long in the photos but we only had to wait like 5-10mins, it was pretty quick for a peak day. Luckily we didn’t splurge on an express pass.

We also went on the Revenge of the Mummy Ride.. it was probably the scariest ride for me because it was pitch black most of it and there were ‘mummies’ appearing out of no where.. and the sudden drops.. but it was fun haha.. I wish we bought the photo from the ride where it captured me screaming and eyes closed..oops Again, there was barely a queue with this ride!

Y SO SERIOUS?

Hungry time = Lunch time! We ate at the Discovery Food Court which apparently had selection of Singaporean food, we’re in Singapore so I figured we should have as much Singaporean food possible :S They had sets to choose from. We got 2 x Laksa sets (as shown above), no drinks included.. but it came with a rice pudding for dessert (not pictured) – not a fan. Probably the most expensive Laksa we had in Singapore.. for about SG$10 a set.. it was average, not expecting much from theme park food. It filled us up at least.

Next stop! Transformers! The newest addition to the theme park! I couldn’t believe it was actually opened, when we were in Singapore! Well because I read news that it won’t be officially open till December or something.. but it opened the week before we arrived for ‘testing stage’. I was sad the water rides in Jurassic Park were closed temporarily but Transformers made up for it!

Longest queueee for obvious reasons! We waited probably 30mins or more looping around.. but they had all these screens giving you a rundown of ‘the mission’. For the entire waiting time we were scared/uncertain what sort of ride it is. The guy at the front said its a 3D simulation ride… so apparently you won’t be moving that much but it feels like you are?? (simulation).

You actually sit into a cart thingy and our curiosity was finally answered. The cart drives from one end to another infront of 3D screens (we wear 3D glasses btw) with scenarios that make you feel like you’r falling face forward off a building! So exciting it felt so reallll… yes they had the whole fire (insert heat).. water (light water spray) too!

Can see why they had these warning signs up! Fortunately I’m not prone to any of those! phew! Because that was the best ride in the whole theme park! I wish the queues weren’t so long cos I’d wanna go agaiiin!

It was raining heavily when we got out, sadly USS isn’t as rain proof as it should be for Singaporean weather.. so we had to get drenched.. and found ourselves joining the Poncho squad. SG$2 ponchos. The rain didn’t last long enough to make the most of it though… boo!

We did our souvenir shopping (finally ), sadly there weren’t much to choose from! It was sooo limited that I actually didn’t know what to buy back for my siblings (of course I finally decided on something muuuch later) I bought myself a Gingy Plushie too!

That was the end of our USS trip – theme park was incredibly small.. I can see how people could’ve done it in 4hours… we did it in 4-5 because we took our time.. also how expensive it is for the time you can only spend in there (SG$72/pp during peak season) Was sad that we didn’t get to take photos with enough characters! Like Po from Kungfu Panda! Oh well I hope to see them when I go to… Universal Studios in California! (whenever that is), but it was probably the one day that we took the most ‘couple’ photos in.

Outside of USS we spotted several random ‘characters’ (like the tin soldier) about taking photos with people.. most recognizable one was Alice in Wonderland! She’s so pretty though I must say the teapot hat looked a lil silly ..

There was a Hersheys store in the area so we checked that out and bought some sweets to bring back. First time having Hershey’s Kisses… I know I’m a late one! But yum cookies and cream kisses! <3 We were tired and wasn’t keen on spending a few more hours going around Sentosa.. since we are pretty sure there is a next time in Singapore… and hopefully by then most of the construction work we saw would be done!

On the cable car ride back was when we realised how worth it it was.. first Singapore sunset with a beautiful view.. I say good timing! It was like a 10min ride back to Vivocity so it was a good chance to just sit back and enjoy the ride.

We MRT-ed ourselves to Clarke Quay where we planned to hop on the River Cruise at night, (it was the 2nd last day of our trip so we had to use up that voucher!).. we were so tired that I didn’t take much photos.. instead did som videoing of the area and the ride.. so you will see more of CQ when I get the video together :S

CQ pretty cool place though; so much history but dressed up to fit in with the modern day crowd. We went there during the day and doesnt compare to its night life (when the bars and restaurants are actually lively!). It was also another colourful part of Singapore! Look at the colourful buildings!

In terms of the River Cruise – we loved it, it ran for about 45mins from Clarke Quay to Boat Quay to Marina Bay. It was lucky too that the boat we got onto at 7PM had a lady playing a Chinese string Instrument (the Piano? ‘kum’ in Chinese..). (There is usually a guided tour but they replaced it with music for that ride) Live music – good old chinese classics with the beautiful night views of Singapore.. a really nice way to end a long day. You will see when I put up the video!

So that was day 6, pretty much our last full day in Singapore

Singapore Day 5

Hai Guys!

First of all, Happy New Year!!! May 2012 be filled with good food and good friends! I’m personally hoping that in 2012 I’ll get to travel more and enjoy some authentic cuisines!… and to be a more consistent blogger! >.<; Read more about my Highlights of 2011 and New Years Resolution on my personal blog!

I’m on one of the bigger ‘dots’ aka islands aka Espiritu Santo in that region!

Yes, I’m also pretty behind with blogging about my Singapore trip, internet on a tropical island is pretty crap, as expected.. so its been taking me 10x longer to do anything online :/ I think I’ve been working on this post for the last 10 days… and just waiting for internet to finally upload all my photos

Anyways! Brings back great memories of each day of Singapore as I blog about it now..

DAY 5. Probably the most out of the itinerary day. It was nearing the end of our holiday and we had so many places we had not gone yet thats on the priority list! So, forget about convenience.. we made sure we ticked off a few places on our list!

First stop. We took a nice long bus ride to VivoCity, apparently the biggest shopping centre in Singapore. I don’t get it? Biggest as in area wise or shop wise? It sorta felt like a Chadstone in Melbourne where its like a long shopping centre with like 2-3 levels? But otherwise I guess I expected a lot more shops.. I’d probably stick to shopping on Orchard road.. but its a good stop and shop if you are on your way to/from Sentosa/Universal Studios. That wasn’t why we were there though. The boy wanted to get his DSLR fixed/cleaned at the Singapore Canon Service Centre, which was like a 3min walk from Vivocity; cost of service here was aloooot cheaper than Sydney. It’s like $30 for a sensor clean? in Sydney its A$60 .. the savings alone make it worth going there hah

Anyway we had breakfast at the food court upstairs of vivocity, another Food Republic with amazing interior that brings you a few decades back to… Old Singapore? China? Lanterns, old doors, old bicycles… Amazing.

I had a Prawn Laksa from the Prawn Mee . Laksa stall, it was about SG$6.50. Boyfriend had Fishball noodle soup from Teochew Fishballs stallfor about $5.50… What a price difference! They were okay – we were looking to get fed and weren’t too picky!

Rain o’clock came around earlier than usual which crossed off the outdoor activities next on our itinerary.. So had to think of indoor things to do….. Long Bar! at Raffles Hotel; apparently one of the oldest hotels in Singapore! Nope – did not take  a photo with the door man at Raffles (who apparently is amongst the top 10 most photographed in Singapore).

The other awesome thing you can do there is to LITTER (in the bar). Incase you didn’t know, “Singapore is a -Fine- country”, or I should say Singapore is very clean and you’d get fined for littering!  So its pretty awesome they excused that law at Long Bar. Fun fact heh.

Otherwiseee Long Bar is also known for their Singapore Sling – a cocktail first created by a bar tender working therein 1915. Today, they have one for every season.. almost got worried not knowing which to choose.. but ah fear not – they had the Original Sling on the menu that consists of Gin, Pineapple juice, Cherry brandy, Benedictine etc…..

Also quite pricey S$26! okay well A$20.. we only ordered one to try since both of us aren’t big on alcoholic drinks and ordered a lemon lime bitter as well.

We snacked on peanuts Free, and unlimited serving! and yeh toss as much as you like!

Singapore Sling! It was prettty nice for a cocktail, not too strong either, loved the blend of Cherry and Pineapple mm. Was interesting reading about how its made, they use Pineapple juice just so it could create the frothy top!

Ordered chips to accompany our drinks, this costed about S$10 from memory. Ah I could buy 2 meals with that at a hawker centre…

So yeah, if you did the  maths it was a fairly costly one hour, think we spent just under S$50 there (which could’ve paid for a day’s worth of food for 2!) Not a bad experience, but I wouldn’t say its a must go and must try if you are in Singapore. Raffles hotel is pretty nice to just walk around, check out the architecture etc. or if you an avid photographer who happens to own/want a Leica, there is a Leica store at ground level. It looked too intimidating (like an exclusive showroom) that we didn’t go in.. since we don’t own a Leica!

Anyways, the other place we had to cross of on our itinerary was… a trip up to the Sky Park! at the top of Marina Bay Sands Hotel. When researching our accommodation we were close to doing 2 nights at Marina Bay Sands Hotel and the remaining nights at our chosen hotel… but we figured it would have been a waste of money.. considering one night was like $298.. 2 nights alone could almost pay for our entire trip staying at our other accommodation, so we changed our mind there, decided to save the money and spend it on like.. food and shopping! We made a good choice IMO since we wanted to control our spending as much as possible.. save the luxury stays for when we are rich.. if ever!

It costed S$19/pp to go up to the Sky Park, not bad considering you’re paying for super awesome views surrounding Marina Bay!

Also the funniest thing happened when we stepped foot onto the Sky Park; bumped into some close friends from Sydney! Knew they were in Singapore but had no idea what their itinerary was.. what a coincidence! even weirder when we discovered we were staying at the same hotel, and leaving on the same day (cept their flight was like 1-2 hours before ours) some strange coincidence there!

*No tripods allowed – had to rely on high ISO’s Some dude was semi-smart and brought a monopod up, hah

We never got around to see it infront of us… but got to see it below us haha.. they showed projections in this water feature (the blue ‘cloud’ of water at bottom left of the above photo) We were standing at the upper level of the observation deck.. so yeh there’s another level below as you can see.

The reason for wanting to stay at MBS is so we can have access to the other end of the sky park, where you get to experience one of the feature’s MBS is most famous for – its Infinity Pool! It’s like swimming at the very edge of a building that is God knows how many stories high..

We were so lucky we ended up going to that side of the Sky Park! It is restricted to guests, but apparently at 9PM they had tours for groups of 30 or 50 people to that side.. so I’m glad we waited for it. Would’ve have known if our friends didn’t tell us! Apparently you had to get a wristband when you buy your ticket that allows you to go there.. a complimentary thing I suppose. I’d strongly recommend you to go maybe 1-1.5hr before 9PM, because thats how long we waited just to go to the Sky Park!

Sooo glad we waited to go there! Got our money’s worth and had a rough idea whether its worth paying the $300 in a future trip just for the infinity pool. I have to admit it is pretty damn nice views at night, I’d probably splurge a little for a night just to experience it!

It was about 9:30 when we left the Sky Park, we were certain it’d be hard to find food back on Orchard rd and didn’t feel like walking around to find food near our hotel.. so we resorted to the food court just downstairs of Marina Bay Shopping Centre. Food stalls were already packing up at 9:30 so we had to quickly decide what we wanted. Wasn’t too fussed with what we ate (since food is usually pretty decent anyways!) Just wanted to get a feed!

So ended up getting Century egg (left) + salty pork congee with Beef Hor Fun (right)

These were around S$6 each. We were in such a rush that we didn’t take notice of the food stalls. The congee was pretty nice.. pretty much all the congee we had in Singapore had this silky smooth texture, loved the consistency!

So that wraps up our 5th day in Singapore, does not look like much.. but in reality we walked alot, saw alot.. just didn’t photograph a lot! blames weather

Singapore Day 4

This post isn’t as photobombed, sorry! (?)

Itinerary for the day 4 ; Chinatown, Telok Ayer (which we didn’t reaallly get around to), Meet dad’s friend for lunch, Night Safari.

As you  may know, buses have been our main choice of transport and one thing we learned from our bus trips was how close everything is! Or should I say how small Singapore is! Maps are misleading! – everything looked so, so far. They say Singapore is the size of Sydney, I believe that. Most of the places which tourists would visit are conveniently next to each other, it’s almost like traveling around the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. Hard to experience this on the MRT as most of it is underground

In relation to day 4, we had a strange start. We were so certain that we were on the right bus until we found ourselves in Raffles Place (CBD in SG) and we thought, oh crap where is this bus going?? So we hopped off to avoid going any further. Opened up our reliable iPhone map app (so handy!) and it shows that one of the main streets in Chinatown was just streets away! Just a 5-10min walk we found ourselves at the border of Chinatown.

First stop. Breakfast at Maxwell Food Centre.

There seemed to be a few recommended places in this hawker centre (even some that we had not read reviews about, you could tell they are popular based on the long lines!), and since we were meeting my Dad’s friend for lunch, we only had breakfast time to conquer it!

One of the well known stalls is, the best Hainan Chicken Rice stalls – Tian Tian Chicken Rice. (Stall #10, Maxwell Food Centre, Singapore)

and its Anthony Bourdain approved.

At just S$3.50 a plate it’s a bargain! (again we shared a plate for breakfast, probably one of our least hungry mornings)

Now the verdict -

What I enjoyed about Tian Tian chicken rice is that, the chicken was tender and juicy, although a bit on the oily side but I guess thats what gives it the flavour! Definitely the nicest hainan chicken I’ve tasted during the trip. As for the rice, it was OK to me; wasn’t as flavourful as I thought – which was a bit of a let down as you would hope the chicken rice itself would match up to the chicken! I preferred the Boon Tong Kee rice more as it was more flavourful.

Our appetites weren’t as big as we wanted it to be so instead of having another dish of something we went for snacks.

I felt so “heaty” inside from all the hot food we’ve been having the past few days and not hydrating enough so we wanted a cooling drink badly! Havent had sugarcane juice for 2 days to balance it out so maybe that’s why.. Other than sugarcane juice, herbal jelly tea is a great cool drink alternative so we bought one. I love how they made it convenient for people on the go with the plastic bag handles on the side! Though at times I was so scared it’ll slip out or rip! so I just hold it normally anyway!

This also reminds me of some things we did not experience such as, drinking ‘teh’ (tea) out of a plastic bag or eating hokkien mee out of brown paper package.

Pan Cake – Stall #26 Maxwell Food Centre 7am – 5pm daily, 7am – 3pm Sunday

This ‘Pan Cake’ stall doesn’t sell the type of western pancake you imagine. In Singapore, pancakes or otherwise known as Mee Chian Kueh, are generally pancakes rolled up with flavoured paste in the middle. At this stall, the difference of their pancakes is that pandan is the base flavour of their pancakes and you can choose from green bean, red bean, coconut and peanut as the filling/spread in between.

I read recommendations for the Red bean Pandan Pancake combo so that was a quick decision made! It was a little chewy and not too sweet which is good, but what I loved most is how the redbean complimented the pandan perfectly.

Chinatown

After this short food stop, we were extremely exhausted. Tried our best to walk down the main strip of Chinatown, you’d find the Chinatown markets and several temples. It was also particularly hot that day! or only in Chinatown? We chose to find a airconditioned space to sit (and drink or something) instead of walking around and waiting for my dad’s friend. Never knew it was that hard to find one! until we came across OG department store (which by the way, the clothes they sell in there felt like it was straight from the 90s), airconditioning – tick, courtesy seats – zero. We realised Singapore isn’t big on courtesy seats There was a mini cafe inside the department store so we just bought a bottle water and sat there pretending we were planning where to go next, making sure we look like tourists so we don’t get shooed off.

We rested enough and walked around the outside of OG building, there were other shopping centres around; nothing exciting. Such as the People’s Complex (i think??) where you’ll find cheap, cheap electronics, and cheap, cheap (dodgy) looking massage and facial places. I.. wouldn’t go there.

Yum Cha in Singapore

Lunch time finally came around, my dad’s friend did not want to take us to local eateries instead to experience Yum Cha in Singapore. It turns out that it is hard to find a restaurant that does Yum Cha like its supposed to be – rolling carts around. So we should be thankful to still be able to experience that in Sydney! Anyway him and his wife took us to Yum Cha Restaurant (yep thats the name) amidst the Chinatown markets, wasn’t as crowded for Sunday lunch – most of the people there seemed like tourists. A lot of the buildings in Chinatown were old terraces revamped into shops etc. This restaurant was no different, situated upstairs you get the old chinese home feel with the wooden chinese windows etc. The servings were quite small, as in the size of a siu mai almost felt like half the size of the juicy fat siu mai’s we get in Sydney! Other than the usuals there were some interesting dishes that we’ve never had before. They were awesome of course I wish I had taken photos of them now!

Chinatown Markets

We strolled around the markets downstairs, it almost felt like an outdoor paddys markets so Chinatown is the place to go for your cheap souvenirs. A lot of the souvenir in Chinatown felt like the souvenir you would buy if you were in China e.g. chinese statues, engraved personalise stamps. Dad’s friend tells us, there really isn’t a truly Singaporean souvenir as a lot of the things are inspired by neighbouring countries (Malaysia, Indonesia etc.) As orchids are Singapore’s national flower, we did come across ornaments where the orchid is in a glass/resin casing. So pretty, but pricey! about S$20-50. We did not buy one Bought our share of Singapore magnets and got a lift back to the hotel as we were still so exhausted and wanted to rest up before the Night Safari!

Singapore Night Safari

Was raining so heavily just when we were about to leave for Night Safari! we kept our hopes up that they rain will stop later (which it did!). There were several options to get to the Night Safari, by certain bus routes or you can hop on to the Night Safari shuttle bus (costed $4.50/pp but you can purchase the entry ticket onboard and save a few dollars too, i think it was S$30, usually S$32) has several pick up points in Orchard, Little India, Marina Bay etc. Check their site for pick up points!

We chose one of the Orchard stops, sooo close to missing it, thank god the shuttle was a few minutes late! It was about a 40min-1hour ride, the longest distance we’ve travelled in Singapore! We got there a little early, just as it was starting to get dark – we allowed enough time to look at the shops, eateries, performances on site.

We watched the Creatures of the Night show –  which was awesome! It was an outdoor performance, where you watch certain animals (e.g .wolves, raccoons) come out for performances and have the chance to say.. hug a giant snake! the show is Recommended!

Next, we hopped onboard the Night Safari. At first we thought it’d be a short ride but we were mistaken! Actually went for a good 45mins. Travelled in the darkness and you’ll get to see a variety of animals, exotic ones. Which really made me wish we had time to go to the Singapore Zoo as well! It was interesting and weird that they had hyeenas on one side of the track and deers on the opposite side. You’d wonder how they keep the hyeenas from jumping across the track to get their meal..

Some shots we took, it was quite dark so it was tricky to capture! Wished we had the 70-200 f2.8 lens. .

They give you the option of hopping off half way through the ride and go on the walking trail; which we didn’t do since we were so tired (not bothered)!

That was the end of our Night Safari and it is highly recommended! I mean this is probably the closest you’ll get to a safari of some sort without going to Africa.. so why not??

We got on the shuttle again (another$4.50/pp) and was dropped off on Orchard. Its soo impossible to find food in Orchard around 10pm by the way. We gave up and took the bus back to our hotel. Then we remembered there was another recommendation of a chicken rice (yeh 2nd serving in a day) place not far from our hotel.

We got off 2 stops early just to buy a quick takeaway from Wee Nam Kee (Novena Ville , 275 Thomson Road, Singapore, 10am – 12:30am) Not a hawker stall, but a small family restaurant. What I love about Singapore, dining places open late!

S$4 Late dinner (we got one each by the way). Have not experienced eating out of a foam box in a while.

Our 3rd and final serving of Chicken Rice from the whole trip. I must say, it definitely doesn’t match up to the other 2 we had, tasted a little more MSG than; Boon Tong Kee and Tian Tian Chicken Rice. But aye, its still better than the chicken rice we find in Sydney foodcourts!
